A quiet demo

I wanted the margin notes to feel like marginalia in a used book — there when you glance over, gone when the page is small.¹

The trick is restraint. A note only floats to the margin when there's genuine room for it; otherwise it waits politely at the foot of the page.² You can link out, too — to Wikipedia on the webring, say — and a little card appears without taking you anywhere.

"Room" is measured at runtime from the actual column position — so it adapts to the window rather than assuming a fixed width. ↩
